Palpabl vs. NetBox Labs, Auvik, and Datadog NPM: An Honest Breakdown
We built a full feature matrix comparing Palpabl NMS against the three tools it gets compared to most. Here's what it shows — including the things we haven't shipped yet.

We get a version of the same question a lot: "How does Palpabl actually compare to [NetBox / Auvik / Datadog]?" Usually followed by a more pointed version: "Does it do X?"
So we built out a detailed comparison matrix and decided to publish it as-is, roadmap gaps and all. Engineers see through vendor comparison pages that conveniently check every box. We'd rather give you an accurate picture and let the product earn your trust.
Here's the short version.
Where Palpabl is the clear choice
If you're running on self-hosted NetBox — or you've been eyeing NetBox but don't want to manage the infrastructure — Palpabl is the only managed platform built on the same data model. Same schema, same concepts (sites, racks, prefixes, circuits), no re-learning curve, no migration headache. We're designed for teams where the NetBox admin and the person who owns the network budget are the same person.
On the source-of-truth side, we match NetBox Labs feature-for-feature: IPAM, DCIM, circuit tracking, virtualization modeling, unified data graph. Auvik and Datadog NPM don't play in this space at all — they're monitoring tools, not network documentation platforms.
On pricing, we're the only option with transparent self-serve pricing, a free tier (up to 20 devices, no card required), and predictable monthly billing. NetBox Labs and Auvik both require a sales call to get a number. Datadog's consumption model is notorious for surprise bills.
On AI capabilities, we support standard and premium model tiers (GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Claude Opus, GPT-5) and Max Mode for extended context reasoning. No other tool in this comparison comes close on AI depth today.
Bottom Line
If your team needs a network source of truth — a single place where device inventory, IP space, rack layout, and circuit data actually live — and you want it managed, affordable, and AI-assisted, Palpabl is built for that. Neither Auvik nor Datadog are.
Where we're still building
This is the part most vendor comparisons skip. We won't.
Real-time device monitoring and alerting are coming with our agent, which is in active development. There's no committed timeline yet — we don't have dedicated dev resources allocated to it right now, and we'd rather tell you that than give you a date we can't stand behind. This is high on the priority list.
Topology auto-discovery is planned after the REST API user-facing layer ships (targeting end of June) and we can deploy installable collectors into your network. The API itself exists and works — key provisioning for users is the piece landing this month.
Change management and operational branches are not in the platform yet. This is a roadmap item, not a current feature.
Bring-your-own API key and custom/private model hosting are also not currently available. Private model hosting in particular isn't expected within our current roadmap scope.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR EVALUATION
If real-time monitoring, alerting, or topology auto-discovery are hard requirements right now, Auvik covers those today. Evaluate us again when the agent ships. If your primary need is network documentation, IP management, and source-of-truth infrastructure, we're production-ready for that today.

The version of us you should evaluate
If you're running Auvik today specifically for real-time monitoring and alerting, we're not the right swap yet. Come back when the agent ships.
If you're on self-hosted NetBox and want someone else to run the infrastructure — or you're standing up network documentation from scratch — start a free trial. The core platform is production-ready, the free tier has real capacity, and setup is fast enough that you'll know within a session whether it works for your environment.
If you're paying Datadog to monitor your network and the bills are unpredictable, the source-of-truth and documentation layer we provide is something Datadog doesn't do at all. They can coexist, or you can evaluate whether Palpabl covers enough of your monitoring needs once the agent ships.
